I CAN GET MORE ENERGY

The Question: If you are feeling tired or having a hard time concentrating, is there something you can do to help you feel more energy?
The Activity: Make a list of activities that you like to do with your family or friends that might help you feel more energized and relaxed. Then go do one of these activities. (Hint: Sleeping is an activity. So is eating a healthy snack and playing a game of basketball.) Notice how you feel afterwards. Become a scientist about yourself. On another day, do another activity on your list. Notice how you feel. Learn how you get more energy!

I CAN BE KIND

The Question: What could you do that is kind or generous for a teacher, your parent, your friend, your pet or a new student in class?
The Activity: Talk about it with someone in your family or a friend. Then take action. Do an act of kindness. Do it with different people in your family or community. Notice how you feel before and after.

I CAN BE HAPPY

The Question: When you are feeling sad or upset, is there something you can do to help yourself feel happier?
The Activity: Get a little notebook or blank paper, and keep it in your room or another special place. * Write down, or dictate to your parent or teacher, three things for which you feel thankful. Another way to say that is three things you “appreciate” or are “grateful for”. These can be small things (like “I appreciate when my mom reads me a story at bedtime”) or big things. Do this once every week.

Download the Qi-IQ “I Am Thankful Journal” and use it to write down what you feel thankful for each week.

Check out these songs on our programs for more ideas on happiness:

Happiness Is A Thing Within
Friendship
The Best Things In Life Are Free
Pennies From Heaven

NOTE to Parents: The “I Am Thankful” Journal is founded in research based findings in the field of Positive Psychology. If your child is too young to write down his or her ideas, you can help by being his or her “secretary”. If your child seems “stuck”, you can ask open ended questions like “What is something you liked this week?” Avoid prompting or giving suggestions or “editing” your child's ideas. No matter how big or small or silly it may seem, write it down. This will help your child feel safe to express ideas freely.

I CAN CALM MYSELF

The Question: If you are feeling stressed or upset, is there something you can do to help yourself feel calmer and more relaxed?
The Activity: For thousands of years people around the world have practiced different ways to relax and calm their mind, body and spirit. Here is a simple meditation finger pose practice that you can do anytime and any where.
Step 1: Pretend your middle finger, “Tall Man” , is a hot dog.
Step 2: Pretend your other hand is a little bun. Gently wrap it around the hot dog finger. Keep it there for a minute or two.
Step 3: Breathe OUT and IN naturally. Don't try to change your breath. Just listen to your breath while you hold your finger. What sounds do you hear? Do you notice the quiet place between the OUT and IN breaths?

Stop whenever you are ready to stop. (A minute or two is often just enough, but longer is fine, too!)

Check out these songs on our programs for supporting a relaxing moment or two:

Danny Boy
What A Wonderful World
Jenny Rebecca
Not While I'm Around

Note to Parents: Use of the breath and gentle touch on the body are part of many relaxation and mind quieting practices worldwide. Make sure that your child is not taking excessively large breaths or squeezing the finger tightly. “Gentle” and “natural” are the keys to relaxation. Promotes physical and mental well-being.
